Can You Catch Bed Bugs in Ambulances, Trains, and Planes?
How Do Bed Bugs Travel?
1. Ambulances
Ambulances can be vulnerable to bed bugs, especially if a patient has come from an infested environment. Given the close quarters and high turnover of patients, it’s possible for bed bugs to travel on clothing or in bags. Healthcare providers should be vigilant about inspecting the ambulance for signs of bed bugs to prevent an infestation.
2. Trains
Trains, particularly those with sleeping cars or long-haul routes, can provide an ideal environment for bed bugs. They can hide in the seams of seats, luggage racks, and even between cushions. Travelers should inspect their seats and luggage areas before settling in for a journey. Additionally, keeping bags elevated and avoiding placing them on the floor can reduce the risk of picking up bed bugs.
3. Planes
Planes are not immune to bed bugs either. While the likelihood of encountering bed bugs is lower than in trains or ambulances, it can still happen, even in front of the First Class “curtain“. Bed bugs may hide in the fabric of seats, in overhead compartments, or in the cabin crew’s uniforms. Passengers should be cautious when storing their belongings in overhead bins and should inspect their seats for any signs of bed bugs before taking their flight. Hard-sided carry-on bags are now considered a best practice for road warriors.
Signs of Bed Bugs
- Bites: Small, itchy welts on the skin that often appear in a line or cluster.
- Dark Spots: Tiny black dots (excrement) on your seat, luggage, or bedding.
- Eggs and Shed Skins: Small, white eggs or molted skins in hidden areas.
Prevention Tips
- Inspect Before You Settle: Always check your seating area, luggage racks, and any potential hiding spots for signs of bed bugs.
- Keep Belongings Elevated: Use luggage racks or keep bags off the floor to minimize contact with infested surfaces.
- Seal Your Luggage: Use hard-sided luggage or sealable bags to keep your belongings protected during travel.
- Wash and Dry: Upon returning home, wash and dry your clothes on high heat to eliminate any potential hitchhikers.
